Varicose veins are enlarged and twisted veins that bulge from the legs. These veins are caused by ‘venous reflux’. This is where the valves in the vein do not function correctly and fail to pump the blood sufficiently. This causes the blood to fall back into the veins. As the blood builds up, the increased pressure stretches the vein, and they become visible above the skin.

Varicose veins can be hidden or invisible in 9 – 20 % of the population. A Coloured Duplex (vein mapping) examination is crucial to identify these veins and treat them.

Spider veins are small needle-shaped blood vessels and are usually in the first upper layer of the skin (epidermis), which is expanded and visible.

Spider veins are very common, affecting 80% of adults.

In some cases, spider veins can indicate an underlying vein problem. The preferred treatment of spider veins is the microfoam sclerotherapy.

Research and clinical studies show that over 60% of cases of varicose veins treated surgically will recur.

There are many pathological and technical reasons why veins come back; the most common cause is neoangiogenensis, the formation of new blood vessels.

When surgeons strip and cut veins surgically, the body tends to re-establish the continuity of the circulation by building new blood vessels.

Treating recurrent varicose veins requires special treatment to ensure they do not come back.

Hyperpigmentation and hemosiderosis are conditions characterised by the darkening or discolouration of the lower leg, ankle or foot.

It is often an indicator of malfunctioning veins which compromise the return of blood from the leg to the heart, resulting in the pooling of blood which can eventually cause discolouration. This malfunctioning is called venous insufficiency.

Left untreated, venous insufficiency can become chronic venous insufficiency. This can lead to more serious health issues, including leg and foot ulcers that do not heal.

We can treat these conditions with a special laser (PICO Laser) which pulses energy in very short intervals to destroy the pigment molecules.

To ensure long-term results, we also use a special cream.

Conditions FAQs

See the answers to some of our most frequently asked questions below

Most of our patients, about 67%, have recurrent varicose veins that have already been operated on or treated.

Treating recurrent varicose veins requires special treatment to ensure they do not come back.

Recurrent varicose veins are the main focus of treatment in our practice.

Sure. Please bring all examination documents and your medication with you. However, we must, in any case, carry out a new colour duplex ultrasound examination (vein mapping) on our premises.

Yes, in any case. The colour duplex examination (vein mapping) is the only specific examination of varicose veins. Whether internal varicose veins are present can only be determined and further treated by undertaking vein mapping first.

The cost of treatment depends on which procedure you require. This will depend on the findings from your ultrasound examination (vein mapping). We will prepare a cost plan for you once we have examined your legs and decided on a suitable treatment.

With our minimally invasive treatment methods, it makes no difference whether you have the procedure in winter or summer. However, the symptoms of varicose veins are more likely to occur in summer.
